Extended Essay and the Collaborative Sciences Project

The DP core · biology

Two pieces of the DP core sit alongside biology without being part of the syllabus: the Extended Essay, which you may choose to write in biology, and the Collaborative Sciences Project, which every DP and CP science student takes part in. Neither is examined as content, and both are easier if you start thinking about them early.

📝The Extended Essay in biology

The Extended Essay is a 4,000-word piece of independent research on a topic of your choice, supervised but not directed by a teacher. In biology the topic may come from the syllabus or go beyond it; the best essays usually reach a little past it.

Areas that tend to work well share one feature: a local, measurable question with a clear variable, not a survey of a large topic.

Ecology
the distribution of a species along an environmental gradient on a local beach, rice field or forest edge; comparing biodiversity of two habitats
Physiology of plants
effects of salinity, light quality or a plant hormone on germination or growth of a local crop
Microbiology
antimicrobial effects of plant extracts used in traditional medicine; microbial activity in fermented foods
Biochemistry
enzyme activity in fruit ripening; vitamin C content of fruits stored in different conditions

What makes a good research question

  • Narrow enough to answer in 4,000 words. “What is the effect of sodium chloride concentration on the germination rate of mung bean seeds?” is answerable. “Salinity and plants” is not.
  • Biological, not chemistry- or environmental-studies-shaped. The essay is assessed as biology, so the analysis must rest on biological principles — physiology, cells, genetics, ecology, evolution. An essay measuring the vitamin C content of juices is chemistry unless it asks a biological question about the fruit.
  • Grounded in your own data where possible. Primary data is not compulsory, but an essay built on your own measurements almost always outperforms one built only on literature, because it gives you something genuine to analyse and evaluate.
  • Supported by real theory. The strongest essays explain why the result came out as it did, at the level of cells and molecules, rather than only reporting that it did.
  • Ethical. The same rules apply as for the IA: no harm or distress to animals, informed consent for human participants, safe handling of microorganisms.

Practical advice

  • Do a pilot study early. Biological material is unpredictable: seeds fail to germinate, cultures die, weather ruins fieldwork. A trial run tells you whether the method works and how many repeats you need.
  • Think about time and seasons. Growth experiments take weeks; fieldwork may depend on the time of year. Plan backwards from the deadline.
  • Use statistics properly. Biological data are variable; standard deviations, error bars and an appropriate test turn “it looked different” into a supported conclusion.
  • Keep a research journal. Your reflections feed directly into the reflection sessions and the engagement criterion.
  • Reference as you go. Retro-fitting citations is the most reliable way to commit accidental malpractice.
The essay and the IA must not overlap. The same piece of work cannot be submitted for both. If they are in the same area, they must ask genuinely different research questions and rest on different data. The safest course is to make them different topics entirely.

🤝The Collaborative Sciences Project

The CSP is an interdisciplinary sciences project that every DP and CP science student takes part in. It is required but not assessed: no marks, and no submission.

Its purpose is to address a real-world problem that can be explored through the sciences, integrating knowledge from more than one subject. Working with students of chemistry, physics, environmental systems, computer science or design technology, you identify a complex issue, research the interrelated systems and processes behind it, develop solution-focused strategies, and evaluate and reflect on how hard real problems are to solve. Problems with a strong biological element — plastic pollution on local beaches, water quality in a river, mosquito-borne disease, food security, coral reef decline — are natural choices, and they cross national boundaries, which is part of the point.

It takes 10 hours of the experimental programme at both SL and HL, and develops collaborative skills — teambuilding, negotiation, leadership — that no written paper tests.

Take it seriously despite its being unmarked. The collaboration and communication skills are exactly those the IA and Extended Essay reward, and a real local problem you have already researched is a far better Extended Essay starting point than a topic pulled from a list.

📅Deadlines and support

Extended Essay deadlines are set by your school, not the IB, and are always earlier than they feel. The structure is broadly the same everywhere:

  • Choose subject and supervisor — usually near the end of year one.
  • First formal reflection session — on your topic, sources and initial plan.
  • Data collection — over the long break or early in year two, allowing for seasons and failed trials.
  • Interim reflection session — on progress and difficulties.
  • First full draft — the only draft your supervisor may comment on.
  • Final submission, followed by the viva voce, a short concluding interview, and the final reflection.

The three reflections total 500 words and count towards the assessment, so write them properly rather than in the last hour.
