Cambridge International AS & A Level Physics 9702

Syllabus for examination in 2025, 2026 and 2027. AS Level is the first eleven topics. A Level students study all of those and topics 12 to 25.

If you have older notes numbering “Measurement techniques” as topic 2 or “Current of electricity” as topic 11, they follow the previous numbering and no longer match. — Mr. Suta

📃The papers

AS Level is Papers 1, 2 and 3. The full A Level adds Papers 4 and 5, and the AS papers then count for half as much of the total.

  • Paper 1 — multiple choice, 1 h 15 min. 31% of AS, 15.5% of A Level.
  • Paper 2 — AS structured questions, 1 h 15 min. 46% of AS, 23% of A Level.
  • Paper 3 — Advanced Practical Skills, 2 h. 23% of AS, 11.5% of A Level.
  • Paper 4 — A Level structured questions, 2 h. 38.5% of A Level. The single biggest component.
  • Paper 5 — Planning, Analysis and Evaluation, 1 h 15 min. 11.5% of A Level.
Papers 3 and 5 together are a third of the AS grade and just under a quarter of the A Level grade, and neither is a written-theory paper. Paper 5 in particular is not about recalling physics at all — it is about designing an experiment, handling uncertainties and analysing data. Students who revise only content walk into it unprepared.
